EUSEBIO AQUINO
Tatang Bio, as he was revered by the people of Magalang was born in Concepcion, Tarlac as Eusebio Aquino. Later, he became a resident of San Nicolas, Magalang. He married Ciriaca Gabriel of Mexico, Pampanga and had six children. A blacksmith and mechanic, he ran a big shop in the pre-war days that made plowshares and repaired tractors. His creativity gave way to the development of the trolley which won for him a certificate of recognition in the Malacanang Palace. Unfortunately, the said certificate was lost when his house was destroyed during the Japanese occupation. The shop served as the headquarters of the Socialist movement in the Mount Arayat area.
He was known as Commander Bio but his Huk name was Panday Pira. The self-taught peasant leader also did odd jobs for General Servillano Aquino, a distant cousin when he was farming in Magalang. The Japanese gave a mission to the General to perform. Sometime in 1943, Don Mianong was guided west from Tarlac into the O’Donnel reserve and up the Zambales ranges to a steep roost called Barrio Aglipay, where the Aquino huk waited. At that time he was the ranking commander in Central Luzon, second only to Taruc. It was a meeting of two revolutions: the bourgeois revolution of yesterday and the modern era’s revolt of the masses.
The meeting of the two Aquino’s began with Don Mianong making a disclaimer. What he had come to say was no discourse of his own, said he, but merely a message that the Japanese had asked him to convey: You know how anti-American I am, but I did not know that the Japanese were imperialist too. So I respect your convictions. But I must say what I havecome to say.”And of course the message of the Jap to the Huk was: SURRENDER!” Old Bio asked how many troops did Gen. Aquino have when he fought the Americans. “Only a handful,”replied the old insurrecto. And how many guns did the handful have? “We had a few arms”. And yet smiled old Bio, the general had persisted in defying the Americans! On the other hand, continued the commander, he himself had enough men, thousands of troops, and this army of the people had guns and machine guns and dynamite and grenades and stores of ammunition: So why should we surrender?” Don Mianong said he saw the point: “ And if circumstances were different, I might be with you – and be sure I would not be left behind on the wayside!” The two cousins laughed and, over a mountain repast, fell to talking of pleasanter things, and to reminiscing, until it was time for Don Mianong to be escorted back to the foot of the hill. He was not sorry to have failed in his mission.
Eusebio Aquino’s family were also involved in the socialist movement. The sons Pablo, Aquilino, Felix, Ruben and Dado also supported the father’s cause. His daughters-in-law Brigida and Irene were also supportive. It was a family affair.
The members of the socialist movement became relatives by marriage. The youngest daughter Gloria married Peregrino (brother of Luis Taruc) . Felix married Remedios (daughter of Commander Sumulong).
Eusebio Aquino’s wish “Eyu ku lalako keni anggang e tamu ikua ing panikwanan tamu”. (Do not take me out here till we attain our goal). So when he died he was buried at the mountain (Mt. Pinatubo). A stone marker was placed, but the grave was burried with volcanic ash during the Mt. Pinatubo eruption.

Tomas.

ATTY. ISIDORO D. AYUYAO
Mayor of Magalang during the Japanese occupation. Due to unbearable hardships met in the hands of the Japanese, Mayor Isidoro Ayuyao left with his family for Paniqui, Tarlac on Dec. 7, 1944. A few days later on Dec. 10, 1944, the Japanese took 22 civilians from a barrio of Mexico and bayoneted them to death near the stacks of palay just behind the central school in the town.
The felt need for the services of Mayor Isidoro Ayuyao for the people of Magalang was
evident. He was urged by them to return. So, on December 24, 1944 he returned with his family and served the town till the coming of the Americans in January 1945.
The last years of the Japanese occupation were years of suffering and hunger. Evacuees from Manila and suburbs flock Magalang. Bombing from Allied planes began. To releive this situation the Magalang Social Service League was organized thru the initiative of Mayor Isidoro Ayuyao. This league took charge of casualties in the war and reception of evacuees.
On September 16, 1951, the whole town of Magalang was shocked by the kidnapping of Atty. Isidoro D. Ayuyao and co. who attended a wedding party in San Francisco. The group were invited to attend a meeting at sitio Tambacan. It was there that they were kidnapped and presumably killed by the lawless elements.
