HISTORY OF STA. CRUZ
The official name of the barrio is Sta. Cruz.
Formerly this barrio was named "Alasas", Sta. Cruz due to many "alasas" leaves that covered both sides of a small stream running accross the barrio.
The barrio came originally from San Pedro.
The barrio was established in the year 1880. The original founders of the barrio were Don Pablo Luciano, Jacinto Catap, Alberto Maniago, Domingo David and Estanislao Dayrit.
The "alasas" plants that grew on both sides of the stream were nice hiding place for the Spaniards. It was not long though when they discovered that the "alasas" leaves injured their skin.
Don Pablo Luciano donated a land for the site of the barrio chapel. The barrio people with their teniente del barrio cooperated in the construction of the chapel. However, in the early part of the American regime the said chapel was destroyed.
In 1884, a vernacular school was opened with Evaristo Navarro as teacher for the boys and Candelaria Ordonez for the girls.
In 1946, the barrio chapel was constructed thru the initiative of the daughter of Cabezang Ladislao Dayrit.
